In Little Italy, you can’t pass by the distinctive neon signs welcoming guests to the neighborhood. There was no trace of fog, and the views… well, they were simply marvelous. On one side, the bay of San Diego, on the other, the open Pacific – and only those neat rows of white headstones reminded that this place is primarily a cemetery, not a viewpoint. Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in brief

History of the Point Loma hillside cemetery dating back to the 19th century

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery did not appear on the map overnight. Its origins date back to 1852 when President Millard Fillmore designated the southern part of Point Loma — then about 567 acres — for military use. The place is named after General William Starke Rosecrans, a Civil War hero, congressman from California, and interestingly, also an inventor.

One of the events that became part of the history of this place was the December Battle of San Pasqual in 1846, during the Mexican-American War. Nineteen soldiers commanded by General Stephen Watts Kearny died then. Initially, they were buried where they fell, later — in 1874 — they were moved to the San Diego Military Reservation, and in 1882 their remains were transferred to what is now Fort Rosecrans.

In 1922, the residents of San Diego funded a commemorative boulder from the battlefield with a plaque memorializing the fallen — and it is one of the oldest monuments that can be seen at the cemetery today.

Tragedy of USS Bennington in the port of San Diego

July 21, 1905, San Diego woke up to news of a disaster that shook the entire city. On board the USS Bennington, anchored in the port, a steam boiler exploded. 62 sailors were killed, and most of the crew were injured. At that time, it was the greatest tragedy that had ever affected the city.

Two days later, the victims were laid to rest in a specially designated section of the cemetery, called Bennington Plot. For some time, it was even referred to as the ‘Bennington National Cemetery’. To this day, one of the most distinctive places in Fort Rosecrans is the granite obelisk commemorating this disaster – it’s impossible to miss while walking down the main avenue.

How Fort Rosecrans became a national cemetery

October 5, 1934, Fort Rosecrans officially became part of the national cemetery system. One of the reasons for this decision was the overcrowding of the then-existing national cemetery in San Francisco, which served veterans from all over northern and central California. Combined with changes in law – expanding the list of people eligible for burial – and the rapid increase in the population of southern California, choosing Point Loma for the next necropolis was a natural step.

In the following years, the place began to take its current shape. By 1938, thanks to funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, Spanish-style administrative buildings and walls marking the boundaries of the area were built here.

Sacramento is largely a city of Wild West and Gold Rush history. The best sightseeing strategy is to start at Old Sacramento (the historic center), visit the museums, and leave the afternoons for walks in the parks or Midtown. Below are attractions in the order I recommend.

Old Sacramento Waterfront

Old Sacramento is a historic district along the Sacramento River, listed as a National Historic Landmark – wooden sidewalks, cobblestone streets, and 19th-century buildings create an exceptionally cohesive scene here.

A few blocks of buildings from the Gold Rush era, well preserved – Old Sac is small but full of history. Shops, restaurants, and museums occupy original buildings from 1850-1870. The distinctive sound of boards underfoot and the facades from that time make it one of the few places in America where you can feel the atmosphere of a nineteenth-century town without excessive theatricality.

It’s worth coming in the morning before the school trips arrive. In the evening, Old Sac changes its character – fewer families, more open bars and restaurants.

California State Railroad Museum

The California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento is one of the largest railroad museums in the USA – over 225,000 square feet of exhibits, 21 restored locomotives and cars, admission from 12 USD for adults.

Free admission. Capitol Park around the building is open 24/7 – in spring, trees from a collection of plants from around the world bloom here, and in summer it is an ideal place for a break during sightseeing.

Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park

Sutter’s Fort is the oldest restored fort on the West Coast, founded in 1839 by Swiss immigrant John Sutter – admission about 5 USD for adults, fort open daily 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Here you will find recreated rooms from the era: forge, bakery, prison cell, warehouses – everything to a scale that allows you to imagine the life of settlers before the Gold Rush. The fort is located in Midtown, about one and a half kilometers from Old Sacramento.

Important information: California State Parks is currently redesigning the historical narrative of the fort, including the perspectives of the native Nisenan and Miwok peoples, whose lands these were and whose labor built this colony. If you visit, it’s worth keeping this in mind.

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament from 1889 is one of the largest cathedrals west of the Mississippi, with a tower reaching 65 meters – free admission, open to visitors Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Bishop Manogue was inspired by the Sainte-Trinité Church in Paris, where he studied theology in 1860, and this inspiration is visible in every detail. The exterior architecture is Italian Renaissance; the interior blends Victorian style with later additions. The dome, closed for 70 years for acoustic reasons, was reopened during renovations in 2005.

Noteworthy inside: stained glass windows, an octagonal marble baptismal font at the entrance, and a restored dome canopy with sixteen medallions. The atmosphere is calm even with tourists – the cathedral is an active place of worship, so there is a natural selection of noise levels.

Tower Bridge in Sacramento is a steel bascule bridge from 1935, illuminated in gold in the evenings – one of the most recognizable symbols of the city, and the walk takes 15-20 minutes.

The bridge connects Sacramento with West Sacramento over the Sacramento River. It’s not long, but the view from the bridge of the city and the river, especially at sunset/, is one of those you want to have in a photo. Every September, the Tower Bridge Dinner is held on the bridge – an outdoor dinner prepared by the region’s best chefs.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Sacramento is surrounded by two rivers: the Sacramento River and the American River, as well as the largest tree canopy in the United States; the city offers over 50 km of bike and hiking trails within its limits.

American River Parkway

The bike and hiking trail along the American River stretches over 50 km from Sacramento to Folsom. Flat terrain, tree shade, river views – ideal for a morning bike ride or run. Several parking lots and bike rental points are located along the trail.

That’s the cost of a ride on the cable car to Roosevelt Island – the same red gondola Sylvester Stallone rides in Demolition Man. 76 meters above the East River, a view of Manhattan from every side, Queensboro Bridge within arm’s reach. You get off on the island and suddenly you’re in a different New York. A narrow strip of land in the middle of the river, quiet (relatively, for NYC), green parks by the water. And history you wouldn’t expect, hidden in the gothic ruins of a smallpox hospital, a park waiting forty years for development, and a house that has stood here since 1796.

How to get to Roosevelt Island – cable car and subway

Roosevelt Island Tramway – the only one of its kind in the USA and Canada

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is the only urban cable car in North America. The ride costs $3.00 and takes about 4 minutes.

The cable car station on Manhattan is located on 2nd Avenue between 59th and 60th streets, right next to the Lexington Av/63 St subway station. It’s hard to miss because you can immediately see the red “gondola” suspended over the street.

Payment works like everywhere in New York transport: you tap your bank card, phone, or OMNY Card on the reader and that’s it. The old MetroCard still works, but the MTA is gradually phasing it out, so it’s worth getting used to OMNY now. If you have a weekly pass, the ride is included with no extra fees.

The cable car runs daily roughly from 6:00 am to 2:30 am, every 7.5-15 minutes (more frequently during rush hours). On weekend evenings with good weather, be prepared for a queue – the sunset views from the gondola are one of New York’s classics.

The island is only about 3 km long and approximately 240 meters wide. You can easily walk around it in 2-3 hours, unless you plan to stay longer in FDR Park.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park

Four Freedoms Park is a free memorial to Franklin Roosevelt located at the southern tip of the island, overlooking the UN and the western Manhattan skyline.

It was designed by architect Louis Kahn in 1974, but construction only began in 2010, and the park opened in 2012. Kahn did not live to see it completed, having passed away in the 1970s. This history adds an emotional layer to the place.

You enter through a linden avenue that gradually narrows and naturally guides your gaze toward the river. At the end is a granite plaza with a bronze bust of Roosevelt. From this spot, when you look at Manhattan, you simultaneously see the UN headquarters on the left and the Queensboro Bridge on the right. It’s worth sitting down for a moment.

Renwick Ruin is a neo-Gothic ruin of the Smallpox Hospital from 1856 – the only officially recognized ruin in New York City.

The hospital for smallpox patients, known as the Renwick Smallpox Hospital, is a historic site located at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York. Designed by the renowned architect James Renwick Jr., the hospital opened in 1856, when the area was known as Blackwell’s Island.

The hospital was the first facility of its kind in the United States, dedicated to the treatment of smallpox victims. The hospital building, designed in the neo-Gothic style, was originally a three-story, nine-bay structure with a granite facade. The hospital’s purpose was to isolate and treat patients infected with smallpox, and later it also served as a nursing school.

After the introduction of the smallpox vaccine in the late 19th century, the hospital was closed, and over time the building fell into ruin. Smallpox Hospital, now often referred to as the Renwick Ruin, is the only ruin in New York City with landmark status.
