Residents also suggest that Wednesday evenings are much calmer than Saturdays or Sundays.

The most pleasant time to visit is in the morning, between 8:00 and 10:00, when it’s empty and the light is great for taking pictures. If you like warmer colors, take a walk during the golden hour – an hour before sunset – when the buildings and gardens look exceptional. On Wednesday evenings, a special attraction is live jazz at Panama 66, and there are significantly fewer people.

It’s worth remembering that the Timken Museum of Art is always free, so you can pop in for a short walk between other attractions.

Water was brought in from the mountains, and winters – harsher than the pangs of conscience after a Saturday night in the saloon – with temperatures dropping below -30°C, took a deadly toll among the weaker.

The winter of 1878/1879 proved to be particularly cruel and went down in history as the one that decimated the residents, who died en masse from diseases, hunger, and cold. It was the harsh price for dreams of gold in the unfriendly Sierra Nevada mountains.

Development lasted until the 1880s. Bodie had a telegraph, its own newspaper ‘Bodie Morning News‘, a bank, a miners’ union, and even a railway line for transporting wood. But fate is fickle, and gold is exhaustible.

The beginning of the decline occurred in 1881 when gold deposits in the area began to diminish. The population dropped to 1,500 people, and additionally, a fire in 1892 destroyed a significant part of the town. Fate dealt another blow in 1932 – a great fire, caused by a boy playing with matches, consumed most of the remaining buildings.

Mining continued until 1942, but the pace was already very slow. Reasons for abandonment? Depleted deposits, falling gold prices after the Great Depression, a harsh climate, and lack of infrastructure. In 1910, Bodie was home to only about 700 people, and by 1943 – just three!

The last residents left in the 1940s, leaving Bodie to the mercy of the wind and time. Today, Bodie is a symbol of the fragility of Wild West fortunes, a city that rose on gold and fell because of it.

Today, Bodie is a true gem among ‘ghost towns’ – the best-preserved abandoned city in California, and perhaps in the entire United States. Since 1962, the city has functioned as Bodie State Historic Park (National Historic Landmark), protected by state authorities. The town operates according to the concept of ‘state of arrested decay’. This means that park wardens perform minimal maintenance sufficient to prevent the complete destruction of buildings, but do not restore them to their former glory.

Wood creaks in the wind, paint peels, and inside houses, you can see forgotten furniture, whiskey bottles, and newspapers from the 1930s. Peeking in gives the impression of stepping into a time capsule – everything looks as if the residents stepped out briefly and never returned. Tables are set for meals, clothes hang in wardrobes, books lie on shelves, and tools in workshops.

To this day, less than 10% of the original infrastructure remains – about 170 buildings, including the Methodist church from 1878, a school with benches and blackboards, residential houses with preserved interiors, a saloon with a bar and poker tables, a general store full of cans and tools, the ruins of the Bodie Bank, and remnants of mines, such as the Stamp Mill with ore-crushing machines.

History of the Point Loma hillside cemetery dating back to the 19th century

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery did not appear on the map overnight. Its origins date back to 1852 when President Millard Fillmore designated the southern part of Point Loma — then about 567 acres — for military use. The place is named after General William Starke Rosecrans, a Civil War hero, congressman from California, and interestingly, also an inventor.

One of the events that became part of the history of this place was the December Battle of San Pasqual in 1846, during the Mexican-American War. Nineteen soldiers commanded by General Stephen Watts Kearny died then. Initially, they were buried where they fell, later — in 1874 — they were moved to the San Diego Military Reservation, and in 1882 their remains were transferred to what is now Fort Rosecrans.

In 1922, the residents of San Diego funded a commemorative boulder from the battlefield with a plaque memorializing the fallen — and it is one of the oldest monuments that can be seen at the cemetery today.

Combined with changes in law – expanding the list of people eligible for burial – and the rapid increase in the population of southern California, choosing Point Loma for the next necropolis was a natural step.

In the following years, the place began to take its current shape. By 1938, thanks to funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program, Spanish-style administrative buildings and walls marking the boundaries of the area were built here.

Old Sacramento (also known as Old Town Sacramento) is a historic district in the very heart of California’s capital, located along the banks of the Sacramento River. I stumbled upon Old Sacramento by chance a few years ago during my trip along the west coast. Initially, I planned to travel to Lake Tahoe, but the weather forecast quickly dashed those plans. Additionally, the road through Death Valley was closed, which prompted me to change my route. I didn’t want to risk getting stuck on an unknown path, and a visit to Yosemite Park was also out of the question because many interesting viewpoints are inaccessible in winter. As a result, I decided to head to Sacramento, and then continue south, towards Las Vegas. That’s how I “ended up” in Old Sacramento.

Sacramento is largely a city of Wild West and Gold Rush history. The best sightseeing strategy is to start at Old Sacramento (the historic center), visit the museums, and leave the afternoons for walks in the parks or Midtown. Below are attractions in the order I recommend.

Old Sacramento Waterfront

Old Sacramento is a historic district along the Sacramento River, listed as a National Historic Landmark – wooden sidewalks, cobblestone streets, and 19th-century buildings create an exceptionally cohesive scene here.

A few blocks of buildings from the Gold Rush era, well preserved – Old Sac is small but full of history. Shops, restaurants, and museums occupy original buildings from 1850-1870. The distinctive sound of boards underfoot and the facades from that time make it one of the few places in America where you can feel the atmosphere of a nineteenth-century town without excessive theatricality.

It’s worth coming in the morning before the school trips arrive. In the evening, Old Sac changes its character – fewer families, more open bars and restaurants.

California State Railroad Museum

The California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento is one of the largest railroad museums in the USA – over 225,000 square feet of exhibits, 21 restored locomotives and cars, admission from 12 USD for adults.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM), closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

The historic Sacramento Southern Railroad train ride along the Sacramento River is charged separately – tickets are 15 USD for adults, 8 USD for children (6-17 years), children under 5 free. The California State Capitol is a building from 1874, serving as the active seat of the state government and a free museum open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The white building with a dome modeled after the Capitol in Washington impresses already from the outside – especially from the side of Capitol Park with its tree-lined avenues. Inside, free guided tours are offered (lasting about 30 minutes, covering the history of the building and the Transcontinental Railroad).

Free admission. Capitol Park around the building is open 24/7 – in spring, trees from a collection of plants from around the world bloom here, and in summer it is an ideal place for a break during sightseeing.

Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park

Sutter’s Fort is the oldest restored fort on the West Coast, founded in 1839 by Swiss immigrant John Sutter – admission about 5 USD for adults, fort open daily 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Here you will find recreated rooms from the era: forge, bakery, prison cell, warehouses – everything to a scale that allows you to imagine the life of settlers before the Gold Rush. The fort is located in Midtown, about one and a half kilometers from Old Sacramento.

Important information: California State Parks is currently redesigning the historical narrative of the fort, including the perspectives of the native Nisenan and Miwok peoples, whose lands these were and whose labor built this colony. If you visit, it’s worth keeping this in mind.

Crocker Art Museum

The Crocker Art Museum houses the oldest public art collection in the western USA, founded in 1885 – the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, admission from 15 USD for adults.

The collection includes European painting, California art from the 19th century to contemporary times, and photography. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of 19th-century European watercolorists and ceramic sculpture. The building itself is a 19th-century villa with a modern wing added, a combination that works better than you might expect.

The Leland Stanford Mansion is an 1856 residence restored to its Victorian-era state – free guided tours take you through the original interiors with preserved Stanford family furnishings.

Stanford – co-founder of Stanford University, governor of California, and senator – built this residence overlooking the Capitol. The tour is free, and the guides know every detail of the house’s history. Few people visit compared to other attractions, which makes it all the more interesting.

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament from 1889 is one of the largest cathedrals west of the Mississippi, with a tower reaching 65 meters – free admission, open to visitors Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Bishop Manogue was inspired by the Sainte-Trinité Church in Paris, where he studied theology in 1860, and this inspiration is visible in every detail. The exterior architecture is Italian Renaissance; the interior blends Victorian style with later additions. The dome, closed for 70 years for acoustic reasons, was reopened during renovations in 2005.

Noteworthy inside: stained glass windows, an octagonal marble baptismal font at the entrance, and a restored dome canopy with sixteen medallions. The atmosphere is calm even with tourists – the cathedral is an active place of worship, so there is a natural selection of noise levels.

Tower Bridge and a Walk Over the River

Tower Bridge in Sacramento is a steel bascule bridge from 1935, illuminated in gold in the evenings – one of the most recognizable symbols of the city, and the walk takes 15-20 minutes.

The bridge connects Sacramento with West Sacramento over the Sacramento River. It’s not long, but the view from the bridge of the city and the river, especially at sunset/, is one of those you want to have in a photo. Every September, the Tower Bridge Dinner is held on the bridge – an outdoor dinner prepared by the region’s best chefs.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Sacramento is surrounded by two rivers: the Sacramento River and the American River, as well as the largest tree canopy in the United States; the city offers over 50 km of bike and hiking trails within its limits.

American River Parkway

The bike and hiking trail along the American River stretches over 50 km from Sacramento to Folsom. Flat terrain, tree shade, river views – ideal for a morning bike ride or run. Several parking lots and bike rental points are located along the trail.

Important note: some sections of the trail have homeless encampments. This is not a reason to avoid the route, but it’s good to be aware of it.

View from the airplane window

I remember the moment when the plane began its descent. Somewhere in the distance, among the hills, the Hollywood sign flickered. Small, surprisingly modest from this perspective, yet it sent a thrill that’s hard to explain logically. “I’m really here.” Those three words kept swirling in my head as the plane touched the runway.

And then a very quick arrival on the ground. A huge airport, lines, car pickup, fatigue after many hours of traveling, and the first encounter with American logistics that works efficiently but demands your focus when all you dream of is lying down and closing your eyes.

And right after that, the freeway. My small rented Ford entered a road that probably had six lanes in one direction, and suddenly I felt really tiny. Huge pickups, SUVs, those American beasts surrounded me, making my little car look like a toy. Everything was speeding by, changing lanes, honking, and after several hours of travel, I was trying to manage navigation, unfamiliar road signs, and a pace no European highway had ever prepared me for. I thought then that America doesn’t give you time to acclimate; it just throws you into the deep end and says: “figure it out.”

The first overnight stay was planned in San Diego, about 200 km away, so barely had I landed when I was already leaving Los Angeles. As if the city was just a starting point, not a destination itself. As if I wasn’t ready yet to face it.

The return, or when Los Angeles really begins

Los Angeles only really began for me a few days later when I came back from San Diego and stayed here longer. And then came the first true confrontation with a place that had existed mainly in my imagination for so long.

Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard, Griffith Park. All those places I knew from the screen were suddenly right next to me, yet they looked completely different from what I had imagined. More chaotic, more touristy, sometimes downright tacky. Souvenir shops, people harassing on the streets, traffic that never ends, and the hot air over the asphalt where everything slightly trembles as if the city itself couldn’t stand still. Los Angeles can’t be explored on foot like Krakow or Rome. Here, everything requires a car, planning, and patience, which after a few hours behind the wheel simply starts to run out.

Traffic jams, searching for parking spots, neighborhoods living their own rhythm, which could actually be separate cities. Exploring in pieces, one day one part, the next day something completely different, with the feeling that you can never really grasp it all. At some point, a fatigue appeared, not so much physical as mental. As if this city had no center, no “heart” that makes you feel “inside”.

Santa Monica, the moment when something changes

And then came Santa Monica and the sunset over the Pacific, which suddenly changed everything. Not because someone told me it was worth visiting there in the evening, not because I read about it in a guidebook, but simply because I was there and saw it. The sky shifted through shades that looked painted, the ocean darkened with every minute, and around, people just stood and watched as if finally, in this noisy, bustling city, silence had settled.

It was one of the most beautiful sunsets in my life. And I say this knowingly because I’ve seen quite a few, in various corners of the world. But this one had something special, maybe because it came after days full of chaos and tourist noise, when suddenly everything calmed down. I stood on the pier, looked at the ocean, and felt the chase for attractions, for “seeing everything”, let go. At that moment, the city showed a completely different face, calmer, more spacious.

That was the first moment when Los Angeles stopped being a collection of places to tick off, and started being a true “experience”. Something you feel, not just see.

Road trip with LA behind me

After a few days of such a “relaxed” way of exploring the city, I moved on. The road trip took me through Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, later through more parts of California, all the way to Nevada and Las Vegas. Los Angeles was left behind me, unfinished, ambiguous, a bit exhausting, a bit fascinating. One of those places that you can’t sum up in one sentence because every summary would be incomplete.

Venice for farewell

And only at the very end of the journey did I return to LA once more, for a moment, just before my flight to Poland.

This time it was Venice. First the Venice Canals, silence, quiet streets, houses by the canals, bridges, people jogging in the morning, a completely different vibe than the one I remembered from Hollywood. If someone had told me this was still Los Angeles, I wouldn’t have believed it. And then Venice Beach, the pier, a random conversation with girls who stopped me out of pure curiosity about where I’m from and what I was doing so far from home. A moment when you feel that traveling is not only about places, but above all about the people you meet along the way.

And then that sunset came.

Beautiful. There’s no other word for what I saw that evening at Venice Beach. The sky in colors you would normally consider exaggerated if you saw them in a photo, but live they looked exactly like that and you couldn’t take your eyes off them. At one point, I stood there alone, just watching, when an older man walked by, looked at me, smiled, and quietly said: “Beautiful, isn’t it?”. And it was so simple, so human, that to this day I remember it better than any tourist attraction in this city.

That was the conclusion of the first trip. Without a big punchline. With an image of the ocean and the awareness that this city gives you moments when you least expect them.

The second time, a collision without filters

The second time, I came to Los Angeles with my family, at the end of another road trip. Accommodation in Hollywood, a motel, closer to the “center of events”. And again everything came back that had been exhausting before: traffic jams, difficult drives, parking, chaos. Only this time I had no filters or expectations anymore, I knew what to expect.

In the morning, a homeless person sleeping on the doormat in front of our room. A collision with reality even more vivid than the first time, because L.A. is not a city that hides its problems. They lie on the streets, literally, and if you come here from Europe, where homelessness also exists but rarely on such a scale, it’s hard to pass by this indifferently.

But along with that, the things that previously saved my perception of this city returned too. The view from Griffith Park, a space unknown to any European city, the light that at certain times of day makes everything look like a movie frame (because that’s exactly why they shoot films here). And the ocean, always the ocean. Sunsets that again paused all the city noise for a moment and reminded why people fall in love with California, despite everything.

A city that can’t be summed up in one sentence

Los Angeles is not a city that you simply like or dislike. It is at once exhausting and hypnotic, artificial and authentic, tacky and beautiful. It is geared toward tourists, yet full of moments that are absolutely real and unique.

L.A. is a city that first disappoints, then annoys, but ultimately leaves images in your mind that keep coming back. Not the Walk of Fame or Hollywood Boulevard, but the sunset over the ocean, the view of the endless panorama from Griffith, a conversation with a stranger on Venice Beach, and a sense of space that simply doesn’t exist in European cities.

And suddenly it turns out that Los Angeles is neither like in the movies nor like in the guides. It’s somewhere in between. More difficult than imagined, but also deeper. And very hard to get out of your system, because just when you think you’ve made up your mind about it, you remember that sunset, that old man on the beach and his quiet “beautiful, isn’t it?”, and you know this city isn’t done with you yet.
