During the holiday, you’ll find almost everything associated with Italian tradition and… New York scale. There is a grand procession with the statue of San Gennaro led from St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, free concerts and dance performances on the streets, as well as many culinary contests, from the famous cannoli eating (in 2025 it will be the 27th edition!), to meatballs and zeppole, which are Italian donuts. Plus, hundreds of food stalls where you can try classic Italian dishes and New York variations of them.

Welcome to Little Italy – iconic signs

In Little Italy, you can’t pass by the distinctive neon signs welcoming guests to the neighborhood. The most famous one hangs above the intersection of Mulberry Street and Broome Street and it is often featured on postcards or Instagram photos. The second, smaller one can be found a little further on, between Hester Street and Mott Street. Both look impressive, but they truly shine in the evening when they light up in the colors of the Italian flag: red, white, and green. Alleva Dairy was once here too. Hop-on hop-off buses

If you prefer a tour bus, both Big Bus and Gray Line/TopView City Sightseeing stop around Little Italy and Chinatown as part of the Downtown loop. It’s not surprising that this underground palace attracts hordes of visitors. Beneath the streets of modern Istanbul lies a true architectural gem – a hall of almost 10,000 square meters, supported by hundreds of marble columns, where each step echoes through the vaulted ceiling.

History of the Sunken Basilica Cistern in Istanbul

Origin of the construction of the underground water reservoir in the 6th century

The Basilica Cistern was built in 532 AD under the order of Emperor Justinian I the Great – the same ruler who commissioned the construction of the famous Hagia Sophia. The decision to erect it was not random. After the bloody Nika revolt in the same year, which almost destroyed the city with flames, the emperor decided not only to rebuild the destroyed buildings but also to protect Constantinople from future sieges.

The place where the cistern is today was not chosen by chance. Previously, this was the basilica of Saint Elias (lat. basilica Sancti Eliae), one of the most important churches of ancient Constantinople. After its destruction in 532 during the Nika revolt, Justinian decided to use these underground spaces to create a gigantic water reservoir.

During Byzantine times, Constantinople had about half a million inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time. The problem was that the peninsula on which Istanbul is located practically has no natural sources of drinking water.

The solution was aqueducts: impressive engineering structures that transported water from distant sources. The Basilica Cistern was mainly supplied by the Valens Aqueduct (Bozdoğan Kemeri), which can still be admired in Istanbul today, and by the Malovaz Aqueduct system. The water flowed from the Belgrade Forest, located 19 kilometers north of the city.

The cistern was intended to provide water to the imperial palace in case of war or poisoning of the water from the aqueducts. This gigantic underground reservoir could hold 80-100,000 cubic meters of water, ensuring water security for the city even during the longest sieges.

After the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, the cistern gradually fell into oblivion. The new rulers preferred fresh water directly from the aqueducts and did not fear the siege of the city. Due to these preferences the cistern was abandoned and forgotten until the mid-16th century, when the Dutch traveler Gyllius rediscovered it, noticing that the locals extracted water from small holes in their basements and even fished there.

Construction of a monumental work

According to historical sources, about 7000 workers were involved in the construction. It is said that many of them died during the completion of this ambitious project. Construction began in 532 during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and lasted until 542.

The finished cistern was an impressive engineering work – it was 140 meters long and 70 meters wide, covering an area of about 10,000 square meters. Its interior is supported by 336 marble columns, each 9 meters high, arranged in rows of 28 columns each. The cistern could hold up to 80,000 tons of water, supplying the Great Imperial Palace and the surrounding buildings.

After the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453, the cistern still served for a while as a water source for the gardens of the Topkapı Palace. When the Turks created their own water systems, the cistern was abandoned and forgotten until its rediscovery by the Dutch traveler Petrus Gyllius between 1544 and 1550.

Ottoman times and oblivion

After the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, the Basilica Cistern initially continued to serve as a water distribution center for the Sarayburnu and Bahçe Kapısı areas. It was also used to meet the needs of the Topkapı Palace. However, when the Ottomans created their own water systems and repaired ancient Byzantine aqueducts, the function of the cistern as a water distribution center was partially limited.

Rediscovery

In the mid-16th century, this structure was ‘rediscovered‘ for the Western world by the French naturalist and topographer Petrus Gyllius, who lived in Istanbul from 1544 to 1555. He was the first to conduct systematic measurements of the cistern, determining that it was 336 feet long, 182 feet wide, and its perimeter measured 224 Roman steps.

Gyllius carefully counted all the columns – he recorded exactly 336 of them – and in his studies, he noted the existence of numerous wells on top of the cistern. In his notes, he mentioned that the residents of the neighborhood were well aware of the cistern’s existence and actively used it, writing that ‘they draw water with buckets and even navigate with boats inside, illuminating the space with lamps and fishing. Through the wells, air and light enter the cistern, and the fish swim in these beams‘.

Modern history of the cistern

Between 2016 and 2022, the cistern underwent the most extensive restoration in its history. 1,440 m³ of cement mortars damaged by later periods were removed along with significant amounts of concrete from the sidewalk structure.

These were replaced with lightweight and modern modular steel platforms. The structure was reinforced against earthquakes, replacing old steel elements with a modern stainless steel tension system. For the first time in 1500 years, the original brick floor was exposed.

Basilica Cistern is particularly enchanting due to its size. Descending, one sees a rectangular chamber of 143 meters in length and 65 meters in width, providing an area of 9800 square meters. The interior height is 9 meters, and the entire space can hold up to 100,000 cubic meters of water (about 80,000 tons).

The structure is based on a system of 336 columns arranged in 12 rows of 28 columns each. The columns are spaced 4.8 meters (about 16 feet) apart, creating a regular pattern reminiscent of a forest of stone pillars.

One of the most fascinating features of the Basilica Cistern is the variety of its columns. The Byzantine builders, wishing to speed up construction and reduce costs, used columns from previously demolished buildings – pagan temples, Roman baths, or destroyed palaces.

This construction, called a groin vault, ideally distributes the weight and is extremely resistant to earthquakes, which is why the Basilica Cistern has withstood over 20 strong shocks throughout its history.

The cistern walls have a thickness of 4.8 meters and were coated with a special hydraulic mortar, ensuring waterproofness and protection against groundwater infiltration.

Floor and drainage system

The original 6th-century floor was made of Byzantine bricks. In the 1980s, during restoration works, about 1440 cubic meters of concrete and 1600 cubic meters of sediment were removed to reveal the original flooring.

Byzantine engineers also took care of the drainage system – there are special openings and channels in the floor that allowed the complete emptying of the reservoir when maintenance was needed.

Medusa Heads, Guardians of the Underground Palace

The most recognizable feature of the Basilica Cistern is the two Medusa heads that serve as column bases in the northwest corner of the reservoir. One is positioned upside down, the other sideways; I haven’t found any official explanation for this arrangement, but apparently, this strange positioning has its justification. According to Byzantine beliefs, inverting the Gorgon’s head was supposed to neutralize its power to turn everything it looked at into stone.

The origin of these sculptures also remains a mystery. Most archaeologists believe they originate from the Roman era and were transferred from a previous monument or temple. The quality of the work indicates that they were elements of a very important building – probably a forum or a triumphal arch.

In Greek mythology, Medusa was one of the three Gorgons – monstrous sisters with snake hair, whose gaze turned people to stone. Paradoxically, despite her monstrous nature, she was also considered a symbol of protection – her image was placed on shields, amulets, and important buildings.

Column of Tears

Among the hundreds of columns, ‘Column of Tears’ (Turkish Ağlayan Sütun) stands out, intriguing visitors for centuries. On its surface, distinctive motifs resembling an eye, surrounded by concentric circles, are visible, which indeed seem like traces of tears running down the stone.

According to a local legend, the column weeps for all the seven thousand slaves who died during the construction of the cistern. However, a more prosaic explanation points to the natural disintegration process of marble, which combined with humidity, creates these characteristic motifs.

Historical Inscriptions

On some columns, traces of Byzantine and Ottoman inscriptions can be seen. Some are marks of the stonecutters, others are memories of people who have visited this place over the centuries.

The cistern in culture – from Bond to Dan Brown

Hollywood Productions

The Basilica Cistern appeared on the big screen in 1963 in the film ‘From Russia with Love‘, the second episode of the James Bond series. In the scene with Sean Connery, agent 007 and Kerim Bey travel by boat among the columns, using the reservoir to observe a fictitious Soviet consulate. The dialogue in the film erroneously attributes the construction to Emperor Constantine and locates it beneath a Soviet building in Istanbul; in reality, the cistern was built, as I already mentioned, under Justinian I and is located in the Sultanahmet district, 150m southwest of Hagia Sophia, far from the former Russian embassy in Beyoğlu.

Contemporary Literature and Culture

In Dan Brown’s bestseller “Inferno” (2013), the dramatic finale takes place right in the Basilica Cistern, and in the 2016 film adaptation, shot mainly in a studio beneath Budapest, Tom Hanks appears in its faithful setting.

Basilica Cistern also appears in the Turkish Netflix series “The Protector”, where it constitutes one of the key locations for the action of the first season. It is also visible in numerous documentaries on the architecture and engineering of ancient Constantinople (including productions by the BBC and TRT).

I remember the moment when the plane began its descent. Somewhere in the distance, among the hills, the Hollywood sign flickered. Small, surprisingly modest from this perspective, yet it sent a thrill that’s hard to explain logically. “I’m really here.” Those three words kept swirling in my head as the plane touched the runway.

And then a very quick arrival on the ground. A huge airport, lines, car pickup, fatigue after many hours of traveling, and the first encounter with American logistics that works efficiently but demands your focus when all you dream of is lying down and closing your eyes.

And right after that, the freeway. My small rented Ford entered a road that probably had six lanes in one direction, and suddenly I felt really tiny. Huge pickups, SUVs, those American beasts surrounded me, making my little car look like a toy. Everything was speeding by, changing lanes, honking, and after several hours of travel, I was trying to manage navigation, unfamiliar road signs, and a pace no European highway had ever prepared me for. I thought then that America doesn’t give you time to acclimate; it just throws you into the deep end and says: “figure it out.”

The first overnight stay was planned in San Diego, about 200 km away, so barely had I landed when I was already leaving Los Angeles. As if the city was just a starting point, not a destination itself. As if I wasn’t ready yet to face it.

The return, or when Los Angeles really begins

Los Angeles only really began for me a few days later when I came back from San Diego and stayed here longer. And then came the first true confrontation with a place that had existed mainly in my imagination for so long.

Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Sunset Boulevard, Griffith Park. All those places I knew from the screen were suddenly right next to me, yet they looked completely different from what I had imagined. More chaotic, more touristy, sometimes downright tacky. Souvenir shops, people harassing on the streets, traffic that never ends, and the hot air over the asphalt where everything slightly trembles as if the city itself couldn’t stand still. Los Angeles can’t be explored on foot like Krakow or Rome. Here, everything requires a car, planning, and patience, which after a few hours behind the wheel simply starts to run out.

Traffic jams, searching for parking spots, neighborhoods living their own rhythm, which could actually be separate cities. Exploring in pieces, one day one part, the next day something completely different, with the feeling that you can never really grasp it all. At some point, a fatigue appeared, not so much physical as mental. As if this city had no center, no “heart” that makes you feel “inside”.

Santa Monica, the moment when something changes

And then came Santa Monica and the sunset over the Pacific, which suddenly changed everything. Not because someone told me it was worth visiting there in the evening, not because I read about it in a guidebook, but simply because I was there and saw it. The sky shifted through shades that looked painted, the ocean darkened with every minute, and around, people just stood and watched as if finally, in this noisy, bustling city, silence had settled.

It was one of the most beautiful sunsets in my life. And I say this knowingly because I’ve seen quite a few, in various corners of the world. But this one had something special, maybe because it came after days full of chaos and tourist noise, when suddenly everything calmed down. I stood on the pier, looked at the ocean, and felt the chase for attractions, for “seeing everything”, let go. At that moment, the city showed a completely different face, calmer, more spacious.

That was the first moment when Los Angeles stopped being a collection of places to tick off, and started being a true “experience”. Something you feel, not just see.

Road trip with LA behind me

After a few days of such a “relaxed” way of exploring the city, I moved on. The road trip took me through Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, later through more parts of California, all the way to Nevada and Las Vegas. Los Angeles was left behind me, unfinished, ambiguous, a bit exhausting, a bit fascinating. One of those places that you can’t sum up in one sentence because every summary would be incomplete.

Venice for farewell

And only at the very end of the journey did I return to LA once more, for a moment, just before my flight to Poland.

This time it was Venice. First the Venice Canals, silence, quiet streets, houses by the canals, bridges, people jogging in the morning, a completely different vibe than the one I remembered from Hollywood. If someone had told me this was still Los Angeles, I wouldn’t have believed it. And then Venice Beach, the pier, a random conversation with girls who stopped me out of pure curiosity about where I’m from and what I was doing so far from home. A moment when you feel that traveling is not only about places, but above all about the people you meet along the way.

And then that sunset came.

Beautiful. There’s no other word for what I saw that evening at Venice Beach. The sky in colors you would normally consider exaggerated if you saw them in a photo, but live they looked exactly like that and you couldn’t take your eyes off them. At one point, I stood there alone, just watching, when an older man walked by, looked at me, smiled, and quietly said: “Beautiful, isn’t it?”. And it was so simple, so human, that to this day I remember it better than any tourist attraction in this city.

That was the conclusion of the first trip. Without a big punchline. With an image of the ocean and the awareness that this city gives you moments when you least expect them.

The second time, a collision without filters

The second time, I came to Los Angeles with my family, at the end of another road trip. Accommodation in Hollywood, a motel, closer to the “center of events”. And again everything came back that had been exhausting before: traffic jams, difficult drives, parking, chaos. Only this time I had no filters or expectations anymore, I knew what to expect.

In the morning, a homeless person sleeping on the doormat in front of our room. A collision with reality even more vivid than the first time, because L.A. is not a city that hides its problems. They lie on the streets, literally, and if you come here from Europe, where homelessness also exists but rarely on such a scale, it’s hard to pass by this indifferently.

But along with that, the things that previously saved my perception of this city returned too. The view from Griffith Park, a space unknown to any European city, the light that at certain times of day makes everything look like a movie frame (because that’s exactly why they shoot films here). And the ocean, always the ocean. Sunsets that again paused all the city noise for a moment and reminded why people fall in love with California, despite everything.

A city that can’t be summed up in one sentence

Los Angeles is not a city that you simply like or dislike. It is at once exhausting and hypnotic, artificial and authentic, tacky and beautiful. It is geared toward tourists, yet full of moments that are absolutely real and unique.

L.A. is a city that first disappoints, then annoys, but ultimately leaves images in your mind that keep coming back. Not the Walk of Fame or Hollywood Boulevard, but the sunset over the ocean, the view of the endless panorama from Griffith, a conversation with a stranger on Venice Beach, and a sense of space that simply doesn’t exist in European cities.

And suddenly it turns out that Los Angeles is neither like in the movies nor like in the guides. It’s somewhere in between. More difficult than imagined, but also deeper. And very hard to get out of your system, because just when you think you’ve made up your mind about it, you remember that sunset, that old man on the beach and his quiet “beautiful, isn’t it?”, and you know this city isn’t done with you yet.
